In the darkest hours following Patrick's murder, when my faith in humanity was severely shaken, it was the response of our community that provided glimmers of light. Today, I want to take a moment to express my profound gratitude to everyone who has stood by our family through this unimaginable journey.
When tragedy struck and our world collapsed, you were there. You brought meals when we couldn't think about cooking. You offered shoulders to cry on when grief overwhelmed us. You watched over our children when I needed to navigate the complicated and painful process of seeking justice. Your presence reminded us that despite the evil that took Patrick from us, goodness still exists in abundance.
To the neighbors who checked in regularly, the friends who sat with us through long nights, the local businesses that contributed to memorial efforts, and even strangers who reached out with kind words and support—thank you. Each act of kindness, no matter how small it might have seemed to you, helped build a foundation beneath our feet when we felt like we were in free fall.
I want to especially acknowledge those who have supported our advocacy work. Your signatures on petitions, your presence at hearings, your sharing of Patrick's story, and your contributions to our efforts to reform Act 911 have transformed personal tragedy into meaningful action. When I see the community rally behind these needed changes, I'm reminded that Patrick's life continues to make a positive impact on the world.
The cards, letters, and messages many of you have sent over these years have been collected and treasured. On days when the legal battles seem overwhelming or when grief resurfaces with unexpected force, I often revisit your words of encouragement. Please know that your support continues to sustain us, even when we don't have the capacity to respond individually.
To those who have respected our family's privacy while still finding ways to show you care—thank you for that delicate balance. To those who still mention Patrick's name, share memories of him, and ensure he is not forgotten, you give us an immeasurable gift.
This journey of grief and advocacy is ongoing, and there are still difficult days ahead. But because of all of you, I've regained something I thought was lost forever in the aftermath of Patrick's murder: my faith in the fundamental goodness of people. For every act of evil, I have witnessed a hundred acts of kindness. For every system that failed, I have seen countless individuals step up.
As we continue our fight for justice and change, please know that your support matters. It matters to our healing. It matters to the cause of preventing similar tragedies. It matters to honoring Patrick's memory.
With profound gratitude and love,
Ann, Destiny and Lucas Massey
